A deaf man named Muharrem, who lives in Istanbul, was more than just surprised when, one shiny day, all of his neighbors started to communicate with him using sign language.
To make this happen, the entire neighborhood spent a whole month learning how to communicate using sign language — the only language Muharrem speaks.
Muharrem was taking a walk with his sister when a stranger greeted them in sign language.
When they entered the nearest bakery shop, a man informed them that they had freshly baked bagels. Again, using sign language!
A passersby ’accidentally’ dropped some fruit he’d just bought. Muharrem and his sister helped the stranger to pick it up, and the man offered them some apples and expressed his gratitude…in sign language.
Even a taxi driver greeted them using sign language.
When they arrived at the city square, Muharrem’s sister, who knew about the whole surprise, told him to look at one of the advertising screens there. The girl on the screen greeted Muharrem and told him that they had just opened a new video call center for hearing impaired people in Turkey — and he was trying it out at that very moment.
The next second, he was surrounded by his signing neighbors who from that moment on could communicate with him freely.
Muharrem was moved to tears, and his emotions speak much louder than any words. Finally, he could live in a world without barriers.
