Heartbroken Cat Has Lived By Dead Owner’s Grave For A Year

Death is a part of life that can be incredibly difficult to come to terms with. Life irrevocably changes after the death of someone close and it can be hard to adjust knowing that the future will not include some of the people you care about.

It’s not just humans who are affected by the death of a loved one. Animals go through the grieving process too, especially when they lose their owner. The human who they relied on for love and attention is cut out of their life with no explanation.

So it comes as no surprise that animals are hugely affected by their owners’ death, with some pets reacting more than others. In Indonesia, one cat has been found living by their owner’s grave and what’s more, she’s been living there for a whole year.

The cat was found after a passersby heard her crying by her owner’s grave in Central Java, Indonesia. Needless to say, people have become worried about the kitty but she is reluctant to leave. Since the discovery, many have left out food and water.

However, the cat walks to its old home every day, to be fed by her owner’s children. She will then walk back to the grave where her owner lies and will not leave until the following day. One man has even tried to adopt her, but she will not stay anywhere but her owner’s grave.

The passerby who was planning to adopt the kitty is 28-year-old Keli Keningau Prayitno. The father-of-one spoke on the matter, saying: “Since the cat’s mother died she has stayed here at the grave. She does not want to go home. She has been here for almost a year. […] I thought she was homeless and tried to help but every time she wold keep returning to the same place. I saw her everyday and noticed that she was always there, but sometimes would leave for a couple of hours then come back.”

He continues, saying: “I followed her and she was going to the home where she used to live and the lady’s children would feed her. Then the cat would go back again to the same place. She sleeps there and meows. It’s very sad to see. It shows just how close animals are to their owners.”

This bittersweet tale of loss and loyalty highlights what a huge part people play in pets’ lives. They’ll never be able to reimburse us for the food, the toys and the vet bills, but they pay us with their love. There really is nothing like the bond between a pet and its owner.
