After learning about how much heavy metal music soothes and comforted his son, Richard McDeid decided to take his son with cerebral palsy to a lot of heavy metal concerts. And when I say a lot, I mean more than 1,200 shows.

Richard’s son, Mason, has loved heavy metal music since he was a toddler. When Mason was a baby, his dad said in an interview, all he did was cry — until Richard put on a Metallica music video. Then, the crying stopped.

“Afterwards, it started happening in the car whenever Metallica was on,” Richard said in an interview. “He would calm down and relax. At first it was only Metallica and then grew to other bands.”

When Mason turned 12, Richard took him to his first concert. Since then, he’s been to more than 1,200, and has seen Metallica 8 times. Mason doesn’t let cerebral palsy affect him from enjoying his life and enjoying heavy metal music.

In 2017, Mason was hospitalized with a 107.9-degree fever, and for a short while, things weren’t looking good. It was then that Richard decided to start Mason MetalFest, a birthday celebration with music, friends, and more.

“Mason was still not 110%, but we had 10 bands playing and so many of Mason’s friends and supporters from the metal scene came out. All those people were nothing but positive, and it was a turning point in his path to recovery,” Richard said.

Since then, Mason MetalFest has become an annual fundraising event to help raise awareness for cerebral palsy. And this summer, Richard and Mason are road tripping from Minnesota to Montreal to go to Heavy Montreal — where they’ll be hanging out with bands like Slayer, Anthrax, and more!
