Hundreds Of Volunteers Show Up At Shelter To Comfort Dogs During 4th Of July Fireworks

Amy Engel/Facebook

We all love fireworks! Yet the 4th of July is one of the most difficult holidays for our pets and wild animals as fireworks cause a lot of stress. It can be even worse for animals in shelters because they are in kennels with nowhere to hide.

During last year’s 4th of July celebrations, Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, in Phoenix, Arizona, came up with a way to deal with some of the stress dogs experience during fireworks. They called it “Calming Companions.”

They invited members of the community to come to sit with the cats and dogs being sheltered there during the 4th of July celebrations.

Believe it or not, about 200 people showed up to comfort the animals and let them know they were safe, despite the loud sounds coming from outside.

When Nicole Elliot saw a photo of a senior dog with terminal cancer on her local animal shelter’s Facebook page, she knew she had to do something.

The Georgia woman decided to not only provide a home for Chester the terrier, but also to make sure his final days would be the best ones of his life.

“Before I went and got him, I decided to do a bucket list,” she told ABC News.

Elliot adopted Chester on June 27 and learned that the senior dog had undergone surgery to remove some of his tumors, but more had turned up. The dog’s owners had surrendered him to a high-kill shelter, and Animal Ark Rescue took Chester in before he could be euthanized.

In addition to cancer, Chester is also tested positive for heartworm, and veterinarians aren’t sure how much time he has left.

A California high school cross country team decided to change things up during summer workouts and, in doing so, they let the dogs out.

The St. Joseph High School Cross-Country Team in Santa Barbara, California, partnered with the Santa Barbara County Animal Shelter to get shelter dogs out of their enclosures and onto the trails and running paths where the team trains.

The team was able to give around 12 dogs a reprieve from being in the shelter by taking them on their morning run August 4. The dogs seemed to enjoy being out as well, although one pooped pooch had to be carried part of the way.

Winter will soon hit the southern hemisphere and some people are already bracing for the cold as temperatures in some area have already started to turn chilly.

Fortunately for some of the stray dogs in Southern part of Brazil, good people have given them a nice place to keep warm and be comfortable.

The Barreirinha bus station in the city of Curitiba opened up their doors and provided beds and blankets for their new furry friends, whom they named Max, Pitoco and Zoinho.

The beds are old bus tires that have been stuffed with warm, fluffy blankets. Fabiane Rosa, a local politician, and animal lover, shared this story to her Facebook page, and of course, they went viral!

It all started when Steve Greig’s beloved dog died. Even after months went by, he was still devastated by the loss so he decided to give another dog a good life.

But when he went to his local shelter, he wasn’t looking for a young pup, he wanted to adopt the “least adoptable” senior dog, as they’re often overlooked and have a slim chance of finding a forever home.

His first was a 12-year-old chihuahua named Eeyore, who came with four bad knees and a heart murmur. That was just the beginning, Greig told The Dodo.

Now, he’s a super busy human dad to a host of animals, including a total of 10 elder dogs.

Every garbage day, 2-year-old triplets wait excitedly for their garbage collectors – Andrew Black, Rob Whitmore, and Chad Cover – to show up.

“The crew gets out of the truck and they high-five the babies and give fist bumps and we talk,” their mother, Martha Sugalski, told Buzzfeed. “They spend 10 to 15 minutes with us every Tuesday and Friday.”

Holden, Heaton and Wilder were just two months old when they started to notice the garbage truck in their Florida neighborhood. Their mom would always wave to the men on the truck, the driver would honk the horn in response and the babies would look up. Andrew, the driver, would wave at the babies. Soon enough he would get out for some high fives and fist bumps, along with his two co-workers. Now it’s a twice a week tradition for the three toddlers and three trash collectors to hang out a bit. Even when one of the men had to take time off due to an injury, he came by to say hello. “Every time I see them, they just bring me joy,” he says.

3 Men Invite Widow Eating Alone At Restaurant To Join Them
Jamario Howard

A man from Lincoln, Alabama, shared a wonderful story on Facebook after he and his friends noticed an elderly woman who was eating alone in a restaurant.

This is what Jamario Howard wrote.

“So tonight JaMychol Baker, Tae Knight and myself went out to eat at this place called Brads in Oxford, and after us sitting there a while waiting on our food I noticed an elderly woman sitting alone.

My exact thoughts was ‘dang I’d hate to have to eat alone’.

So after thinking about it a minute I walked over to her and asked if I could sit with her. She said yes and we talked for a minute and after a while of talking she told me she lost her husband and that tomorrow would have been their 60th anniversary.

After learning about how much heavy metal music soothes and comforted his son, Richard McDeid decided to take his son with cerebral palsy to a lot of heavy metal concerts. And when I say a lot, I mean more than 1,200 shows.

Richard’s son, Mason, has loved heavy metal music since he was a toddler. When Mason was a baby, his dad said in an interview, all he did was cry — until Richard put on a Metallica music video. Then, the crying stopped.

“Afterwards, it started happening in the car whenever Metallica was on,” Richard said in an interview. “He would calm down and relax. At first it was only Metallica and then grew to other bands.”

Man Finds Himself In Audience Full Of People He Saved As Children From Nazi Death Camps

sir nicolas winton

Sir Nicholas Winton organized the rescue and passage to Britain of about 669 mostly Jewish Czechoslovakian children destined for the Nazi death camps before World War II in an operation known as the Czech Kindertransport.

After the war, Nicholas Winton didn’t tell anyone, not even his wife Grete about his wartime rescue efforts. In 1988, a half century later, Grete found a scrapbook from 1939 in their attic, with all the children’s photos, a complete list of names, a few letters from parents of the children to Winton and other documents. She finally learned the whole story.

In the video below, the survivors gathered to give him a wonderful surprise:

This Man Drives Hours Every Day To Provide Water To Thirsty Wild Animals In Drought

Patrick Kilonzo Mwalua water trucks for animals

Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park is rich in wildlife, however, the land has been left dry and hot due to lack of rain over the past few years.

Hundreds of animals have perished due to thirst and heat but there’s not much that the wildlife service is doing about it. But one man took matters into his own hands and he is determined to ensure that these wild animals are given enough drinking water to stay cool.

To help these animals, Mwalua rented a truck. Now, he drives for hours every single day to transport water to several areas in the national park.“Last night, I found 500 buffalo waiting at the water hole,” he said. “When I arrived they could smell the water. The buffalo were so keen and coming close to us.”
