School Principal Installs Free Laundromat After Students Were Bullied For Wearing Dirty Clothes

A principal in New Jersey is being praised for giving his students a fresh lease on academic life.

After observing a high percentage of the school’s students missing class, as well as social media posts bullying students for the state of their clothing, Principal Akbar Cook of West Side High School in Newark had a laundromat installed on the property to offer those in need a way of cleaning their belongings, reported CNN

“These are kids, good kids who want to learn, that are missing three to five days a month because they were being bullied because they were dirty,” Cook explained. “I even changed the school uniform to darker colors so they could go more days without cleaning them, but even with that, students were struggling to have them look clean enough to attend.”

When Christian McPhilamy was six years old, he was inspired by a commercial for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and decided he wanted to help young people with cancer. He decided that day that he wanted to grow his hair long and donate it to make wigs for children with cancer.

So for 2 and a half years, Christian grew his hair out. He was made fun of at school for it, often mistaken for a girl, but that never deterred him from doing what he thought was right.

“Even out and about or at a park, he would be playing with a bunch of boys and they’d be like, ‘you look like a girl.’ And he would just explain to them. He held his head high and he never once said that he wanted to cut it off ever,” Christian’s mom said.

A 75-year-old man visits a local animal shelter every day so he can enjoy “brushing cats” while often falling asleep on the job and napping with the felines.

Terry Lauerman decided one day to introduce himself to a local Green Bay-area animal sanctuary, telling the folks at Safe Haven Pet Sanctuary Inc. that he likes to brush cats.

According to Elizabeth Feldhausen, the founder of Safe Haven Pet Sanctuary, “He just walked in and started brushing,” noting that he never asked to be a volunteer. “So eventually we told him he was an official volunteer and had him fill out our volunteer form.”

The shelter, which opened in 2016, rescues cats with disabilities that would be at risk of euthanasia at other facilities.

Hundreds Of Volunteers Show Up At Shelter To Comfort Dogs During 4th Of July Fireworks

Amy Engel/Facebook

We all love fireworks! Yet the 4th of July is one of the most difficult holidays for our pets and wild animals as fireworks cause a lot of stress. It can be even worse for animals in shelters because they are in kennels with nowhere to hide.

During last year’s 4th of July celebrations, Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, in Phoenix, Arizona, came up with a way to deal with some of the stress dogs experience during fireworks. They called it “Calming Companions.”

They invited members of the community to come to sit with the cats and dogs being sheltered there during the 4th of July celebrations.

Believe it or not, about 200 people showed up to comfort the animals and let them know they were safe, despite the loud sounds coming from outside.

When Nicole Elliot saw a photo of a senior dog with terminal cancer on her local animal shelter’s Facebook page, she knew she had to do something.

The Georgia woman decided to not only provide a home for Chester the terrier, but also to make sure his final days would be the best ones of his life.

“Before I went and got him, I decided to do a bucket list,” she told ABC News.

Elliot adopted Chester on June 27 and learned that the senior dog had undergone surgery to remove some of his tumors, but more had turned up. The dog’s owners had surrendered him to a high-kill shelter, and Animal Ark Rescue took Chester in before he could be euthanized.

In addition to cancer, Chester is also tested positive for heartworm, and veterinarians aren’t sure how much time he has left.
