Sometimes, Christmas comes early. At a California animal shelter this year, it did for a lucky dog. On December 10th, one pit bull puppy got the second chance at life he so desperately needed.
Carson Animal Care Center is an animal shelter that serves Los Angeles, CA and the surrounding areas. It’s also the home to many abandoned dogs and cats. Carson’s pit bull population is often passed over for other adoptable animals, thanks to rampant pervasive pit bull discrimination. Sadly, Carson is a high-kill shelter.
Pit bulls are mistaken for an aggressive breed, but young Benny is quite obviously just the opposite. Shelter workers described him as timid and even shy – and for weeks, no one gave him a second glance. The sweet boy was essentially sitting on death row.
That is, until a rescuer spotted the gorgeous dog and decided to give him the home he deserved. If there’s one thing I’m sure of, it’s that Benny won’t stay shy for long – we’ve seen rescue dogs transform right before our eyes in the past!
You can find out more about the animals still waiting for their forever home at theCarson Shelter Facebook page.
Ed Gernon rescued an abandoned German Shepherd that was living on the streets. The dog, Gernon named “Rex”, was vicious to other animals. After all, he had to use his hunting instincts to survive.
But after being shown constant love, Rex began to trust and his attitude completely changed.
One month after his adoption, Rex found a baby hummingbird covered in ants under a tree. It had fallen from its nest. Gernon was sure it was dead, but Rex refused to leave the bird behind.
Gernon ended up taking the bird inside, nursing it back to health, and teaching it how to fly.
It’s been more than a year, but Hummer refuses to leave, insisting on staying close to the dog and human who never gave up on her.
“It’s like living with Tinkerbell,” Gernon told KCBS News. “It was this little creature. This fragile creature that the whole world wanted to kill and he was trying to protect her so I thought I’d go the distance.
Will the lion spent the last 13 years of his life in a Brazillian circus. Although wild animal circus bans do exist on a local level in Brazil, sadly many animals continue to be abused and exploited in these cruel attractions. Will was one of these animals and the impact of living in a cramped, fetid cage took a major toll on his well-being.
Thankfully, after over a decade of suffering, Will was rescued by Rancho do Gnomos. This amazing organization is a safe haven for domestic, wild and exotic animals who have been abused or neglected. Most of the animals in the sanctuary’s care come from captivity backgrounds, so the staff was more than prepared to help Will adjust to his new found freedom.
In this video, Will steps onto the grass for the first time in years! Seeming to understand that he will never have to suffer in a small cage again, Will makes himself right at home. It’s a shame it took him 13 years of suffering to reach this point, but we are so pleased to see him finally taste freedom!
A warm-blooded man in Russia is being hailed a ‘hero’ for plunging into a frozen pond to save a drowning dog. The thick-skinned swimmer, known only as Ivan, was filmed as he dragged the canine to shore. Footage shows the shirtless 21-year-old using his arms to smash through the ice to catch the dog. The animal bobs just above the surface around ten meters away. Ivan eventually grabs the animal by its body and makes his way back to dry land.
According to the local Russian news channel m24.ru, Ivan had stopped his car near the pond to help a motorist who had broken down. But as he was talking to the driver, he heard the dog barking for help.
The pup apparently didn’t have an owner and Ivan later adopted him, naming him Rex.
Kid: oh, wooden board! (smile)
Dad: what does it say?
K: it’s nice, it is to put meat on it and cut it with a knife. Now I’m only missing a fork.
D:yes but, what does the card say?
K:I’ve read it already, “for you to eat barbecue with your knife. We love you a lot mom and dad”. Thanks!
Mom:you can use any fork (hugh) I love you.

Check out this wonderful video which is totally in line with what this season of giving should really be about.
Love is the core value of this teacher’s curriculum.
Special education teacher Chris Ulmer begins each school day at Keystone Academy in Jacksonville, Florida, individually complimenting each of his students for 10 minutes, The Mighty reported. Ulmer hopes to build confidence and self-esteem among his young students by reaffirming all their good qualities.
“Simple reminders of their positive attributes shifts [the students’] focus from what they can’t do to what they can do,” he told The Mighty.
Ulmer has been working as a special education teacher for the same group of students for the past three years, ABC News reported. Because many of the kids in his classroom previously experienced difficulties in school, Ulmer wanted to do something to make them feel self-assured, so he decided to start each day with one-on-one compliments. With the permission of his students’ families, Ulmer put together a video of one of the compliment sessions and posted it to the Facebook page for “Special Books by Special Kids” — a project he is developing with his students.
“Instead of focusing on deficits I focus on talents,” he wrote in the video’s captions, adding that his daily practice has also led to students complimenting each other. The exchanges have also helped the students better socialize.
Hanging out on your boat, you might be hoping to bring a few fish aboard, but this lucky guy got a much cuter surprise.
The sweet seal looks pretty tired after he hops up onto the vessel for a rest and some snuggles. Swimming around all day must be super exhausting — not to mention just being this adorable. Maybe he mistook the guy’s facial hair as a kindred spirit?
