Cris Mamprim was working the night shift at Hospital Regional Alto Vale in Rio do Sul, Brazil, when a homeless man named César came in seeking treatment.
While César was getting treated for a preexisting condition, Mamprim noticed that a group of dogs had congregated outside the door, waiting for their friend to get released. And, as Mamprim noted on The Dodo, these dogs looked much better fed than your average stray animals.
Talking with César, Mamprim learned that he was the only person taking care of the dogs, often giving up his food to properly feed them. “They are all well taken care of and chubby, seeing them like that, waiting at the door, only shows how much they are cared for and loved” Mamprim said.
The dogs just couldn’t wait for him to come back, but despite their impatience, they behaved as polite good boys.
After César got the treatment he needed, the dogs were allowed inside and reunited with their favorite human, and both them and César were offered some food, and of course, he saved some more to give to his pups later. After discharging César from the hospital and watching him leave with his four best friends, Mamprim and her colleagues were moved by the compassion this man had for his dogs, a man that should inspire all of us to be a better person for the ones we love.
“He has the best companions with him,” Mamprim later wrote. “I do not know what his life is like, or why he’s on the street, but I admire the respect and love he has for his little animals […] If only everyone were like this.”
