This 9-Year-Old Boy Created A No-Kill Shelter In His Garage
Ken, 9, has grown up dreaming about someday having a shelter to help the stray animals that live near his home. He started feeding three stray dogs that he encountered on the streets of Davao City, Philippines.
As Ken’s photo feeding the dogs made its way onto the internet, people from all over the world started donating money. Ken’s dream of opening an animal shelter started to become a reality.
"We got enough money to get the dogs I was feeding off the street, feed them high quality canned food, and provide them with veterinary care,” he wrote on his website. With the donations, Ken and his family were able to rescue the three dogs from the streets. They converted their garage into a shelter for the dogs; they fed them, took them to the vet and nursed them back to health.
Ken named it The Happy Animals Club.
“They gained a LOT of weight, their open wounds healed, and their fur grew back,” Ken wrote. “They also learned not to be scared of humans.”
Happy Animals Club has since then expanded to include 2 yards for dogs to freely roam around, a hut for each yard, and other necessary facilities. With Ken’s guidance and design, a bridge was also made for dogs to climb and play on. Now, they have rescued more than 45 dogs and cats, vetted them, and provide shelter and food and love.
