At Ned Hardy we love and respect animals, but that doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy thinking about what might happen if some of the biggest beasts fought each other, tooth and nail. It’s our natural world version of Godzilla versus Kong. For this latest battle of the beasts we are lining up two apex predators in their own environments, the Grizzly Bear of North America versus the Wild Lion of Africa.
A grizzly bear is wandering through the woods when he spots a massive moose lurking from behind a nearby bush. They make eye contact with neither side backing down or giving up an inch of ground.
The grizzly bear came here for one reason and its not leaving until dinner is served. However, the moose doesn’t intend just to roll over and die. Both of these animals will battle to their last dying breath.
In a fight between a grizzly bear vs a moose, which of them would win?
Records of this morbid behavior in other species go back as far as the 2nd century A.D. Claudius Aelian was a Greek scholar who wrote an entire book about it, citing 21 different incidents. Questions about why some animals behave this way have cropped up over the centuries. Even today, scientists struggle with pinpointing the reason. The biggest question is whether or not the animals commit suicide, knowing what it is.
Wolves hold a special and fearful place in the human imagination. After all, the idea of the werewolf has terrified us for almost two millennia. A form of the werewolf appears in ancient Greek sources, although the concept began truly flourishing in European myths from the fifteenth century onwards. It soon spread to America, and even led to so-called werewolves being persecuted and killed as part of the international witch trials. It’s hard to imagine another animal creating quite the same kind of fear – weremooses, weresheep and even werefoxes just don’t feel quite as chilling.
