Chinese 3D-animated movie ‘Niu Lai’ becomes the most profitable original movie ever, by turning in over $4m in returns on a $200 budget, surpassing ‘Obsession’.

*Niu Lai* (牛来) is a Chinese 3D-animated film created largely by a mother-and-son team, director **Xin Yumeng** and his mother, **Sun Lifang**, who worked on the project for several years with extremely limited resources. The movie follows Niu Lai, a timid young calf who is forced to overcome his fears and learn about courage, friendship, family and responsibility. Its homemade-looking 3D models, stiff animation and unusual dialogue initially attracted ridicule when clips appeared online, but those same qualities quickly turned the film into a viral phenomenon, with viewers embracing its eccentric style and the remarkable story of the people who made it.
Released in China in August 2026, *Niu Lai* initially attracted almost no attention at the box office before memes and social-media clips transformed it into an unexpected hit. Audiences began going to theaters specifically to experience the strange little independent animation, and its unlikely success became part of the appeal. The film eventually generated millions of dollars at the box office despite its extraordinarily small production costs, producing a return on investment that would be virtually impossible for a conventional studio movie to match.
