18 Fascinating Photos That Deserve a Closer Look

The Rodanini pieta, Michelangelo’s last ever work, is markedly different from anything he ever did before. Up until 6 days before his death at the age of 89, he was obsessively working on this piece until there was almost no marble left to work with

The Rondanini Pietà was Michelangelo’s final sculpture, a hauntingly unfinished depiction of the Virgin Mary supporting the body of Jesus after his crucifixion. Michelangelo continued working on it until just days before his death in 1564 at the age of 88, repeatedly carving away marble until the figures became unusually thin and elongated, a striking departure from the powerful, muscular figures of his earlier masterpieces. The sculpture is now housed in the Sforza Castle in Milan, Italy.

IVF to save the Northern White Rhino

Scientists are attempting to save the northern white rhinoceros from extinction using in vitro fertilization (IVF), in one of the most ambitious wildlife conservation efforts ever undertaken. Only two northern white rhinos remain alive, a mother and daughter named Najin and Fatu, who live under constant protection at Kenya’s Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Neither can carry a pregnancy, and the last surviving male died in 2018. To save the subspecies, an international team of scientists called BioRescue has been collecting eggs from Fatu, fertilizing them with frozen sperm from deceased males, and creating embryos that can eventually be implanted into closely related southern white rhino surrogate mothers. In 2024, researchers announced the first successful pregnancy achieved through IVF and embryo transfer in a rhinoceros, although the surrogate mother tragically died from an unrelated bacterial infection before giving birth. By April 2026, the team had created 39 pure northern white rhino embryos, but attempts to establish a lasting pregnancy using these embryos had not yet succeeded. Despite the setbacks, scientists remain hopeful that the technology could eventually produce the first northern white rhino calf born in decades, potentially bringing a subspecies back from the brink of extinction.
