9 Things You Should Know About Brindle Pugs

Brindle pugs are sought-after by many pet owners for their unique coat. However, it can be a little difficult to find one because they are so unusual. In addition to this, some potential owners might be a little concerned that the brindle pug could be unhealthy because it doesn’t have a traditional pug coat. Below you’ll find more information about the brindle pug, such as if they’re purebred and common health concerns to watch out for.

1. A brindle pug is a type of pug that has a patterned coat rather than a solid color.

A brindle pug will have a light brown coat with black markings.
It’s not known how the brindle pug originated, but many breeders claim that the brindle design is one of the rarest pug colors because the brindle gene is scarce in pugs. A reverse brindle pug has a slightly darker appearance and is the opposite of the brindle color. Instead of a light brown coat, a reverse brindle pug has a black coat with light brown markings.

2. Brindle pugs aren’t usually purebred, although a handful of DNA studies have shown that they might be.

Despite this, most experts don’t believe brindle pugs are purebred. This is why they aren’t recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Many breeders choose to not breed brindle pugs because they aren’t recognized by this exclusive club, something which most pet owners desire.

3. Common Health Problems of Brindle Pugs

  • Brachycephalic Syndrome – is a common respiratory problem in short-nosed dogs because their airways are pushed closer together. This medical concern can make it more difficult for the dog to breathe and increase their heart rate.
  • Encephalitis – This condition results in painful inflammation throughout the brain. This isn’t only agonizing but could alter the brain so that it causes fatal seizures.
  • Hip Dysplasia – Can cause the pug to develop irregular joints in their hips. This can lead to leg lameness, difficulty standing, and mobility concerns. Most of the time this can be treated with the help of medications or surgery.
  • Obesity – This dog breed is prone to excessive weight gain because of their vast appetite. Pugs aren’t very athletic, so too much food can cause them to quickly gain weight. Obesity in pugs can cause many problems including lethargy and trouble breathing.
  • Cherry Eye – Pugs are susceptible to cherry eye. This condition causes a small gland to slide out of place under the eyelid and slightly block a portion of their eye. While not considered to be painful, it can be very uncomfortable and itchy.

4. Brindle pugs have the same health problems as regular pugs so there’s no need to worry about them needing extra medical care.

As with most dogs, you’ll need to make sure to keep up with general health check-ups and monitor their fur and ears for infections.

5. Brindle Pug Temperament/Personality

This type of pug is known for its goofy yet calm personality. They’re also very smart and can quickly learn tricks and commands. Because of their docile and forgiving temperament, brindle pugs also make great pets for first-time dog owners.

While a good breed, some brindle pugs can be a little sensitive to being left alone. This could result in them having separation anxiety.

6. Are Brindle Pugs Good with Kids? Are They Good Family Dogs?

Brindle pugs can make great family pets. They are loving and very caring toward children. However, they need to be properly socialized. Otherwise, they could become aggressive toward people they aren’t acquainted with.

7. Despite their small size, brindle pugs do shed a lot.

This breed will lose a lot of hair throughout the year but has a heavy shedding period two times during it – summer and winter. Brindle pug owners will need to make sure to brush their pet often to remove this loose hair. This will prevent fur from spreading everywhere and can protect your pug’s skin from dryness.

8. Brindle pugs are rare. In fact, only 1% of pugs have a brindle coat.

Due to their rareness, it can be a challenge to find a brindle pug breeder. Because brindle pugs are rare they can be somewhat pricey. On average, brindle pugs can cost up to $2,000.

9. How Do I Find a Reputable Brindle Pug Breeder? What Should I Look Out For?

If you’re interested in purchasing a brindle pug it’s crucial that you get the dog from a reputable breeder. You can use the following tips to ensure you buy from a responsible one.

  • Research – One way to tell if the breeder is reputable is by researching them. Check if the breeder has a website and if previous customers have left reviews about them. This can give you a general idea of the breeder’s reputation.
  • Visit Their Home or Breeding Facility – This way, you can tell if they keep their dogs in good living conditions. The canines should have clean and open places to sleep and play. If they don’t, this could be a concern. While here, the breeder might also ask a little about yourself and your residence. By doing so, they can ensure their brindle pugs will go to a good home.
  • Check Veterinary Records – You’ll also want to make sure that the breeder provides veterinary records of both the puppies and their parents. You can check these to make sure the dogs are up-to-date on their shots and that they are healthy.

Brindle pugs are smart and loyal dogs who make great companions. While rare, they don’t differ much from a regular pug’s temperament and needs.
