Seems like just yesterday Scarlet Johansson was kicking the hell out of guards in Iron Man 2, but it’s been thirteen years since then. While her role as Black Widow was a foundational part of the MCU, the actress bid farewell to the role with her character’s death in Endgame, only getting a slight coda with her own film two years later.
So what’s Scarlett been up to since leaving the Marvel limelight? Not nearly as much as you would expect, at least in the public eye. While her last role was reprising Ash, her porcupine heroine in Sing 2, she’s been conspicuously absent since Black Widow when it comes to live-action roles.
Which is understandable, seeing as she’s had a pretty hectic life since 2020 (haven’t we all?). The actress came out of 2019 on a hot streak with Avengers: Endgame making sure she’s rich enough to survive an apocalypse, not to mention getting Oscar nominations for A Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit at the same time.
Eventually getting to film Black Widow during the COVID-19 pandemic, having the release date pushed back a year before it finally released in 2021. During that time, Scarlett Johansson married fiance and SNL writer Colin Jost, Though the film was finally released through Disney+ on a “Premium” access add-on, Scarlett eventually sued Disney for this as a breach of contract.
Johansson and Disney eventually settled their lawsuit for a still undisclosed amount of Mouse-Money(Trademark Pending), but it probably just ensured even more that she doesn’t have to work for another ten thousand years. Eventually said money will probably go to her and Jost’s son Cosmo Jost, who was born in August of 2021 with only the second whitest name ever after Colin Jost.
December of 2021 saw her return to the Sing franchise, taking a top spot in the ensemble kids musical alongside others like Reese Witherspoon, Taron Egerton, and Nick Kroll. The movie was a hit with children, especially with younger kids. Source: My five-year-old child, who hasn’t stopped watching it for a year. Send help.
Scarlet seems to have taken 2022 easy, not saying or doing much most of the year. She seems to have taken time off to be with her new child, but has a pretty full schedule coming up beyond 2023. Though her Marvel days are supposedly behind her and Florence Pugh has stepped in to take her place, it’s not out of the question to return at some point during the Multiverse saga.
Meanwhile, in 2023 she’s set to appear in Wes Anderson’s new film Asteroid City, which sees the auteur filmmaker slowly assimilate all of Hollywood with a story about junior astronomers and some space-related catastrophe. Supposedly the film is Anderson’s usual whimsical politeness, so with any luck, there will be overly-apologetic meteors hitting the earth around Ed Norton while he looks puzzled.
Beyond that there are a few projects in development she’s set to star in movies Project Artemis and My Mother’s Wedding, also producing the former project. She’s also signed on to produce a Tower of Terror film by Taika Waititi, so fingers crossed there. Otherwise, she has a few other projects lined up but seems to be content taking her post-MCU time to relax with family.
Johansson currently holds the box office record for the highest-grossing box office star of all time and was the highest-paid actress of 2019 when all was said and done.
Outside of film, Scarlett has created her own skin care line, The Outset. The Outset debuted in March of 2022 and launched with 5 products and is available to purchase at Sephora.
She splits her time between New York and Los Angeles, continuing acting while also taking care of her small family of Jost, their son, and her older daughter along with their dog, also a SNL alum.
