Sara Rue - Big Bang Theory

Sara Rue is an American actress who has starred in many films and television series. Some of her most well known roles have been in Popular, Less Than Perfect, Two and a Half Men, and The Big Bang Theory. 

Background Info and Early Life

Sara Rue was born in New York City on January 26, 1979. She was born Sara Schlackman. Her mother was a former actress, and her father was a stage manager.

During her upbringing in N.Y.C., both of her parents were active in the Broadway theater scene and were passionate about the arts. She was raised in the Jewish faith. 

Acting Career

At just nine years old, Rue appeared in the film Rocket Gibraltar as Jessica Hanson, the daughter of Kevin Spacey’s character, Dwanye Hanson. Later, Rue would appear in the television show Roseanne as a younger version of Roseanne. She only appeared in one episode.

When Rue was eleven years old, she was cast in a main role in the comedy Grand. The satire of soap operas detailed the lives of three families, one of which starred Rue as a daughter, Edda Pasetti. It appeared for two short seasons in 1990. After Grand, Rue moved on to the sitcom Phenom, where her character, Monica, had a supporting role.

At sixteen, Rue was cast as Darby Gladstone in the sitcom Minor Adjustments. It ran for one season, after which Rue went on to Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane, a teen sitcom. In the television show, Rue played Breeny Kennedy, a disabled teenager who tends to bully others. Rue also had minor roles in E.R. and The Division.

In the television series Popular, Rue was given the part of Carmen Ferrara, one of the show’s main characters. Her character was shown as having a difficult home life as a result of her weight being a constant point of concern and contention for her parents.

Nevertheless, her character is kind, bubbly, and supportive of her friends. Carmen is described as plain, unpopular, and overweight.

However, her character becomes co-captain of the Glamazons cheer squad and dates another character. As the television show continued, Rue’s character diminished from a headline role to a supporting one.

Rue was in forty-three episodes over the course of two seasons of Popular.

Less Than Perfect

In 2002, Rue was cast in the starring role of Claude Casey on the television show Less Than Perfect on A.B.C. Her character was the show’s lead character and had a sweet and quirky disposition as the executive assistant for an anchorman.

Over the course of the show, the newcomer Claude learns to navigate her workplace and gains confidence with the help of her friends.

Less Than Perfect ran for four seasons with a total of eighty-one episodes.

Two and a Half Men

Two and a Half Men cast Rue as Berta’s pregnant youngest daughter, Naomi, for two episodes in season four. In her guest role on the show, her character briefly dates Alan (Jon Cryer) before leaving him for her child’s biological father.

The Big Bang Theory

Rue then moved on to The Big Bang Theory, where she played Stephanie Barnett, a doctor, and surgical resident. Her character is a love interest for both Leonard and Howard. She goes on one date with Howard before leaving him for Leonard. Eventually, Leonard and Stephanie break up. She appeared in three episodes in the second season.

Impastor

Rue starred as Dora Winston, a conservative and cheerful assistant to a faux pastor, in T.V. Land’s Impastor. The show ran for two seasons and had twenty episodes.

Throughout the early 2000s, Rue gained roles in Eastwick, Malibu County, Rules of Engagement, Malibu Country, and American Housewife.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

In 2017, Rue received the recurring role of Oliva Caliban in Netflix’s second season of A Series of Unfortunate Events. Her character is also known as Madame Lulu, a fortune teller at a carnival. She is a love interest of Jacques Snicket and part of the V.F.D. squad. She appeared in seven episodes of the second series.

She has also acted in several films, including Can’t Hardly Wait, Idiocracy, For Christ’s Sake, The Witches of Eastwick, and American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rules.

In addition, Rue is listed as a producer of a television film and two shorts and a writer of two television series.

Sara Rue continues to act, most recently starring in the C.B.C. comedy series B Positive as Julia Dunbar, a real estate agent. The show ran for two seasons and had thirty-four episodes. She also has a guest role on The Rookie as an LAPD dispatcher, appearing in five episodes to date.

In 2010, Rue made headlines for her weight loss. She claimed she lost fifty pounds when she signed on as a spokesperson for Jenny Craig, a weight management company. Rue stated that she had struggled with weight her entire life prior to losing the extra pounds.

Rue was married to Mischa Livingstone, a filmmaker, from 2001-2007. In 2011, Rue married teacher Kevin Price in a Jewish wedding ceremony. The couple welcomed their first daughter, Talulah, in February 2013.

They adopted a second daughter, Adelaide, in November 2016. Rue confirmed that she had struggled to conceive a second child prior to the open adoption.
