Sara Rue was born in New York City on January 26, 1979. She was born Sara Schlackman. Her mother was a former actress, and her father was a stage manager.

At just nine years old, Rue appeared in the film Rocket Gibraltar as Jessica Hanson, the daughter of Kevin Spacey’s character, Dwanye Hanson. Later, Rue would appear in the television show Roseanne as a younger version of Roseanne. She only appeared in one episode.
