Over thirty years before he would revolutionize underwater filming with Avatar: The Way of Water James Cameron went all in for The Abyss in 1989, making one of the most hellish productions in history.
Science fiction has long been a staple of the film industry, captivating audiences with imaginative worlds and thought-provoking ideas. In recent years, the 21st century has seen an explosion of science fiction films, with new technologies and special effects allowing filmmakers to bring their wildest visions to life.
Are ratings and reviews hat important? Film history has shown us time and time again that a movie that upon release might’ve been maligned could gain a completely new reevaluation in the future. This happens with every genre, but sci-fi has given use some real underrated gems in the past couple of decades. Without further ado, here are five of the most underrated sci-fi films of the century so far.
Nowadays, Scarlett Johansson is known for her role as the Avenger Black Widow in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. However, the talented actress has an incredibly long and diverse resume. This includes a string of sci-fi movies in the 2010s which were wildly inconsistent.
“The Man From Earth” is the best Sci-fi movie I’ve ever seen. If you’ve never heard of it, I don’t blame you. It’s a low-budget feature made with a cheap film camera that went straight to DVD in 2007 after a limited theatrical release. It takes place in one location and has no special effects. There’s also close to no action in the movie (save for one dramatic moment).
From future classics like Avatar 2: The Way of Water and Everything All At Once, to indie sleepers like Crimes of the Future and After Yang, 2022 was a fantastic year for sci-fi and fantasy.
Could 2023 be even better? These movies should definitely have something to say about that.
