Don’t let giraffes fool you. They might look weird and wonderful enough to put in a list of the 10 cutest animals, with their absurdly long necks and tennis ball eyes, but giraffes are darker and more dangerous than you know. We’ve written before about the awesome power of a giraffe kick, but did you know they could also use those long necks as clubs, smashing at enemies and each other with the hard, knobbly ossicones atop their heads? At moments like these, look more like something from “Jurassic Park” than “The Lion King”.

If you’ve been reading our recent posts about animal mating but found the sexual habits of hippos and snails a little disgusting or the behavior of male ducks downright disturbing, then this next article will come as a relief. Bald eagles are much more romantic in their sexual attitudes, beginning their courtships in extravagant and moving dances in the air, and then bringing up their offspring as loving and monogamous couples. They are one of the few animals whose love lives really do seem romantic and affectionate, rather than alien and terrifying.

Most snails, including the commonly known garden snail, are hermaphrodites. This means they contain both male and female reproductive organs and produce eggs and sperm. The pomatidae family is the exception, in which males and females are separate, denoted by a smaller and larger shell, respectively. Although in species that host both parts the snails are capable of self fertilization, or asexual reproduction, they will still often mate with another snail.

If you’re someone who’s wondered that, you’ve found the right article because we’re going to break down exactly that today. Spoiler alert: Elton John was right. Crocodile Rocking is something shocking!

If you have fond childhood memories of watching the antics of Donald Duck – or Daffy, or Huey, Dewey and Louie – then you might find what you’re about to read a bit upsetting. If, on the other hand, you remember watching the George Lucas produced 80s megaflop Howard The Duck, and thinking the human/ duck sex scene was deeply disturbing, then you’re about to find out you didn’t know the half of it. Because ducks – yes, cute, quacking, couply ducks – have one of the darkest sex lives of all animals.

If you’re eating while you read you might want to come back later, as we are about to dive into the rather foul sexual habits of the hippopotamus. If you’ve ever heard that old song “The Hippopotamus Song (Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud)”, you might not think that mud is quite so glorious after reading this. But before we enter gross-out territory, let’s first talk science.

Ask a room full of people what their favourite animals are and the chances are one or two will answer “dolphin”. In fact, these creatures inspire such universal affection, with their extreme sociability and playfulness, that a columnist for New York’s defunct Village Voice magazine once wrote an exasperated column entitled “Everyone loves dolphins except me!” Perhaps it’s this adorability that has led to some people believing dolphins mate for life. This is a myth: while dolphins can form lifelong bonds of affection with another dolphin, these are usually between two males. Sexually, they are anything but monogamous.
