What’s it like to have Narcolepsy?
I have been diagnosed with narcolepsy accompanied by mild cataplexy. Imagine the fatigue you’d feel after staying up all night and then having to work or complete a school assignment. That’s my reality every day. Even after sleeping for 26 hours straight, I can wake up feeling completely drained. I’m prescribed Adderall to help me function, but I dislike its side effects. Often, I find myself running late for work or school because it’s so hard for me to wake up. In those moments, sleep feels like the only priority. My cataplexy typically triggers when I’m tickled, rendering me immobile. I can think, see, and feel, but moving my limbs feels impossible. Ironically, there are days when I’m exhausted all day, but when I try to sleep at night, it eludes me. It’s incredibly frustrating. And I can’t help but roll my eyes when people without narcolepsy suggest remedies like keto, exercise, or gluten-free diets as a cure-all. So, that’s a glimpse into my life.
